Reality Cheque

We are studying the Australian Commercial television industry, focusing on the shift in programming towards reality television and its relationship to changing consumer habits, in order to help our reader understand the direction of the Australian commercial television industry.

As final year media students, the Australia commercial television industry is a potential work environment we may be entering, and as such, is an area in which we would like to learn more about. The value of creativity in the industry is questioned due to the strong increase of reality programs being produced, which by their nature of being unscripted drama, makes the creative roles such as screen writing and acting somewhat redundant.

We chose to explore the rise of the reality genre in the industry to prepare us for possibly limitations in creativity, as well as give us an indication of the attitudes and practices of the audiences we would be producing content for. The knowledge of audience behaviours, the economics of reality production and the patterns evolving in the online market will further equip us with tools to handle an always changing media environment, and become competitive employees in the industry.
